Following the United Kingdom’s Oxford University research, testing and use of the steroid drug, Dexamethasone, the South African Ministerial Advisory Committee, has approved its use locally to treat COVID-19 patients who are very sick. It’s also finalising clinical protocols. It is important to note that this drug is only beneficial for extremely ill COVID-19 patients who are either on a ventilator or are being given oxygen, and is said to have little to no effect for other COVID-19 patients. Joining us now to discuss this and other COVID-19 related issues is the Health Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize.
