The spread of Covid-19 in South Africa has picked up significantly. And tonight we’re focusing on the readiness of hospitals. Yesterday South Africa recorded a new record of 7210 new cases – bringing the total reported cases in the country to 131 800. The number of deaths yesterday stood at 2413 with a mortality rate of 1.8%. The Western Cape accounts for 45% of total confirmed cases. But Gauteng is emerging as a major hotspot with 26% of confirmed cases and a rising infection rate. The Eastern Cape is also a province of concern not far behind Gauteng. Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize has warned South Africans to brace themselves as the country heads for the peak of the coronavirus infections. The whole idea of the lockdown was to flatten the curve or prevent a surge of infections that could overwhelm health services. So are we ready?
