Health Deputy Minister Dhlomo to lead World No Tobacco Day Commemoration


Pretoria: Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo will on Tuesday 06 June, lead World No Tobacco Day Commemorative event in Thohoyandou, Limpopo Province as part of government efforts to raise awareness about the dangers of using tobacco products.



The World No Tobacco Day is commemorated annually around the world to highlight the health risks associated with the use of tobacco and encourage governments to put policies and strategies into action to help to reduce impact of smoking and the use of tobacco products on the health systems.



This year’s theme is “Grow food, not tobacco” and it aims to raise awareness about alternative crop production and marketing opportunities for tobacco farmers and encourage them to grow sustainable and nutritious crops.



Deputy Minister Dhlomo will be joined by Limpopo MEC for Health Dr Phophi Ramathuba, World Health Organization Country Director, Dr Owen Kaluwa and leaders of local government and various stakeholders in the sector.


Some of the diseases caused by smoking tobacco include cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung diseases and diabetes. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), tobacco kills over 8 million people annually and smoking any kind of tobacco reduces lung capacity and increases the severity of respiratory diseases.
